Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality battery grinder, great for quick, light grinding/cutting work I'm an Install Manager for a building supply company where I'm in charge of several turn-key trade accounts, primarily for windows, doors, and trim. Several times a week I have to pull out tools to perform minor punch work, so I selected a bundle of Rigid tools to keep behind the seat of my extended cab truck for such occasions. I use this grinder to quickly trim nails, deep sand/shape wood, and occasionally to dress up concrete. For these purposes, the tool performs excellent. Pros: Ergonomically designed. I specifically sought to add this tool to my kit as opposed to a corded, cheaper grinder because of its ergonomic grip. I don't have large hands, and I've used some corded grinders with bulky grips and I feared I'd loose my grip after long periods of use. The grip on this tool is well suited for easy gripping power. Toolless blade guard. In the past I've found blade guards a hindrance, but this guard can be adjusted easily without the use of tools. It rotates all the way around the blade, and can be turned in such a way to protect a thin blade while the tool bounces around in my toolbox. Cutting power is good for light duty work (see below) and speed is sufficient. Works great to shape wood when used with a course grit sanding pad. Cons: Blade is slower to start than some other grinders I've used, probably by a second or two to reach top RPM. I was worried about the RPM speed being less than some corded models, but I've not really noticed it affecting my work. Overall power is just not that of a corded grinder. I've only used this tool once or twice to try and cut concrete (the little bit of concrete work I've done with it is to dress up edges or grind down small imperfections, points where the tool has done fine), and it's done the job but slowly and the battery drains quickly. I wouldn't recommend this tool if you plan on cutting concrete regularly. It's better suited for light duty cutting. Cost. Corded grinders are much less expensive than this one, have more power and speed. Overall, great tool for light duty work. I appreciate being able to leave this tool set up with a blade ready for use and grab to use quickly when needed. Pleased with my purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I like the tool... hate the trigger. I have owned this tool for a little over a month. It was bought for the purpose of cutting 1/8 inch metal plates, chain link fence, grout, tile and all kind of other things. It does shut down if you use too much force but if you pace yourself it cuts fine. The thumb trigger can be difficult to use after an exhausting day. It does eat batteries so plan on getting a pack of 4.0 amp batteries. Overall I'm satisfied and it has definitely become my go to tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not far behind DeWalt I was very unsure about buying this grinder after seeing the reviews, but I am glad I bought it. I used a 20V Max grinder for a few days cutting steel angles for fire doors. This grinder can actually keep up with the performance of the DeWalt, and I am impressed! I like the gradual startup and LED load indicator, two features which the DeWalt did not have. Overall very impressed and would recommend this tool.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not hold up I have had all Ridgid tools for over 12 years. So I was so happy when they finally came out with a grinder, only to be disappointed, It stopped working the first time I used it. I took it all the way to service center (Pain finding one that will honer Ridgid) they had it a month. I got it back, It worked for a day, then same thing... just quit working! I only used it for cutting off nails or thin steel angle.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tool started out good but torque is a let down ! I have 18 different Ridgid tools in electric and battery operated not counting batteries and chargers. The 18v grinder is fine for very light hobby shop work but is a major let down for anything heaver due to low torque. the unit continually kicks out during heavy grinding or light cutting, which I know is not recommended but come on guys. Really !

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 250 bucks by the time you buy an X4 battery set. I was not happy when it only ran for 7 minutes on the batteries that came with my drill and driver. I like Ridgid because of the lifetime warranty on batteries and products. I bought two X4 batteries on sale for 80 bucks each (20 minute run time with those) and was quite unhappy when they were not under the lifetime service agreement. Uuhg---And the bigger batteries are heavy and awkward. I have used other brands of cordless grinders and liked them better, but you know, once you pick a brand, it makes sense to stick with it. ----this is not my favorite Ridgid product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from the built in protections keep this tool from doing real work This tool will suck a newly charged battery down so hard and so fast ,that it will cut out and you have to wait for it to reset itself, 5 or 6 times cutting of a piece of 1 inch by 1/4 inch flat bar, which took 7 or 8 minutes. I have 4 batteries , 2 large and 2 small and it does it with all of them. My large drill, reciprocating saw, circular saw will do the same thing if you are working them hard. The grinder is useless for what it is intended , which is cutting or grinding in areas at heights or where corded tools are unwieldy. it is definitely not going to wear out , ever, because you couldn't do enough real work with it to harm it. It is easy to warranty for life if you engineer protections into them that won't let the tool work hard.. I have a dozen rigid cordless tools and I am going to switch to Dewalt ,Milwaukee , or Makita in the near future.. If you make your living with your tools, be warned

Can this be used as a masonry cutoff tool?

Can this tool be used with a masonry (stone, tile, granite) cutoff wheel to trim a 1/4 in. thick stone backsplash? If so, what is the recommended cutoff wheel?
Asked by: Greg
No, the R86040B is a metal grinder , and is designed for use in the grinding of metal. Use on masonry (stone, tile, granite) could damage the tool, as well as voiding its warranty. Thank you RIDGID
