Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Generator I got this generator to replace another brand (...and another brand). I have a couple of other Ridgid power tools, and their reliability led me to this purchase. We're off grid, and use the generator as backup power and battery charger during extended cloud and snow days. I also use it for heavier loads in the shop, such as welding, or when using the compressor for a nail gun while cutting with the table saw or chop saw. It works flawlessly. This unit starts reliably and delivers clean power whenever needed. When the start battery died, and it's a battery so eventually will, the Yamaha engine started quite easily by hand, considering the size of the motor... and I'm pushing 60. Even at zero degrees outside, it starts on the second pull. As with most medium sized portable generators, it's not very quiet. It's especially not as quiet as an inverter generator, but it's not as loud as my last one, which was smaller with less power. The "idle down" feature helps when using it for shop work, since it doesn't run at 3600 RPM when tools are off, and it's pretty quiet when idling. The "zero gravity" design helps in moving it around, but it's still a chore to pull it up a hill or slope. We live in the mountains, and it's heavy. Pulling is easier than pushing, if going up. As well as it works, it's weight is a minor inconvenience for the power it provides. I like the display, as it includes a reminder when to change motor oil. It flashes across the top of the screen when it's time for service. All in all, it's a great generator. Buying cheap tools will have one replacing them time and again. I know. It will be less expensive to just buy a good unit the first time, instead of buying multiple duplicate items. I highly recommend the Ridgid 6800/8500 watt generator. ...One last thing- someone complained in the "comments" section about how they had problems when their recoil start rope broke. He disassembled it more than necessary. If/when it happens, remove the recoil housing with the four 10mm bolts, then pull the rope from the spool. Don't remove the spool. Have approximately 5' of replacement 3/16" braided rope on hand with a knot on one end. Looking at the housing from the underside, turn the spool counter-clockwise to put tension on the spring, then around once more to where the holes for the rope on the housing and spool line up. It's easy to 'feel' the correct tension. Have a helper or wedge hold the spool from unwinding, and feed the new rope through both holes to the outside, then feed rope through pull handle and tie another knot to hold in place. Gently allow the spool to retract the rope under spring pressure. Again, DON'T take the spool off the housing, or the spring will be near impossible to wind. It works for most any pull start small engine, including this one... I just replaced it even though it's still under warranty. Anyhow, buy this generator... it's a great tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This generator is easy to start and is quiet when running. Bought this generator to replace a 35kw that could not support the load to satisfy all things I want operating during outages. I can run frig, freezer, satellite receiver, TVs and of course lights / outlets. One of the best features is the battery starter. I didn't want something I had to pull a cord to start. I was very surprised with the volume of this machine vs. the 35kw ..... it actually not as loud as the 35kw. Good buy, quality Ridig product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awsome Product This is just what I needed.I had to purchase it out of state, a two hour drive both ways. It was well worth the trip. It is extremely easy to use and powers the medical equip that I need, as well as other necessary items. When the emergency arose another well known, brand of generators did not cut it. However on that night after a 4 hour drive RIDGID came through for me. Is the any other tool ? NO . I also purchased a table saw after the generator. I had a top of the line table saw by another well known, company. I had strip it all down and repair it three times. I am not a carpenter just a home owner. The table saw is well worth the money. Now I check to see if RIDGID make a tool before I buy it. It is a waste of money to buy anything else. Capt. Sinbad USCG Ret

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Runs my 3400SF home I live in a 3400 sq ft Colonial home in rural New England and, due to winter weather, use my generator 12-20 days each year. I purchased this Ridgid 6800 watt generator to replace the Kawasaki GE5000 generator that my late father-in-law bought in 1984. The Ridgid is easy to assemble, easy to connect and easy to start. My old 5000 watt generator would run pieces of the house but his unit has really covered the gaps. I now run the heat (2 air handlers, 4 zones), the water pump, all the outlets, all lights, 5 LED TVs, 2 refrigerators, a chest freezer and a microwave with no issues. It is a little pricier than some of the competitors but I did a lot of research and would highly recommend this generator for the homeowner looking for an easy to start and run unit.

Hooking up the generator

Recently purchased the 6800 generator and wanted to know the recommended order of hooking up to the house. I have a transfer switch. Should I start the generator then plug in the cord. I've never owned a generator and wanted to make sure I hook it up safely an correctly. Thanks in advance
Asked by: Jake42076
We recommend from our operators manual’s, that the generator is stated without any electrical load, (cords unplugged from the panel), once started, then the plug/load can be applied. When shutting down the generator, remove all load and shut generator off.

How to convert Ridgid 6800 generator to natural gas?

Asked by: OkWagner

Idle down feature

Can anyone tell me why the idle down feature will not work on my generator? It runs at the same RPM from the time it starts until the time I shut it down. It will not idle down even when the display is at zero (no load). It has approximately 20-23 hours on it and is kept in out of the rain. I don't believe it has ever worked from the time it was new. Is there something that I can give a quick look at to see if it is functioning correctly? Thank you.

Thank you for your interest in RIDGID! The idol down works after about 5min of no voltage running thru the system. If there is anything plugged into the outlet then even if it is not showing it on the gen smart board there is still a very small amount of power being drawn thru. Like if you have a radio plugged into the generator and is turned off it is still drawing power thru the circuit boards or even a lamp that is plugged in will still draw power even if it is off. If you have read the information from the power company on how to conserve power unplug anything that is not being used because it still draws a very small amount of power. You can unplug everything from the generator and see if it idols down after 5 to 10 minutes, if it does then the idol down works if not then first we need to make sure this is a model with the idol down. If it is then it would need to go to the local service center for repair. Or you can send an email at producthelp@ridgidmail.com and we will be happy to help you directly. Regards, RIDGID

It is flashing Maintenance HRS on the display, what does that mean

Asked by: StevenJ
Thank you for your interest in RIDGID! In the manual, under the maintenance section, the chart lays out what you need to do at each total hours level. Basically, it is a maintenance alert. Regards, RIDGID
