The Cleaning Principles of Using RIDGID FlexShaft Machines Correctly

September 1, 2021

The FlexShaft Drain Cleaning Machines knock out tough grease buildups quickly and efficiently.  IT features impressive wall-to-wall cleaning on 1 ¼-inch to 4-inch pipes and drain lines up to 70 feet. Both models, K9-204 and K9-102, has a chain knocker that expands to the pipe inside diameter to unclog grease, sludge, small tree roots and other soft blockages. Apart from that, FlexShaft Drain Cleaning Machines allow for inspection cameras to remain in-pipe during the drain cleaning process.

More often than not, misuse and not knowing the essential cleaning principles of using the FlexShaft Machines correctly, leads to serious injury and even damage to the drain cleaning machine. Therefore, make sure to follow some of these guidelines below:

  • The FlexShaft Machine utilizes high rotational speed and low torque to clean drains offering more power to your drain cleaning.
  • A user supplied battery powered drill is used to drive the FlexShaft Drain Cleaning Machines. With that, always use a cordless drill set to 1800 - 2500 RPM (usually position 2 speed option).
  • Keep forward rotation only during cleaning to effectively clear soft blockages.
  • Do not use corded drills, hammer drills or impact drivers. An inappropriate drill increases the risk of equipment damage and personal injury.
  • Always set the torque limiter at approximately 80% maximum and never use drill mode.
  • If you activate the torque limiter, retract some cable and resume spinning the tool.
  • Do not allow the chain knocker/end of cable to stop turning while drill switch is depressed. This may overstress the cable and may cause twisting, kinking or breaking of the cable assembly and may even result in serious personal injury.
  • If the cable stops rotating, the operator must be able to re-lease the drill switch to prevent twisting, kinking and breaking of the cable and reduce the risk of injury.
  • The FlexShaft machine is best used by applying light pressure and slowly working the chain knocker into the blockage. It’s important to let the speed of the chain knocker clean the drain – do not force chain knockers into blockages.
  • When using the camera, do not allow the spinning chain knocker to hit its head/push rod as it can damage it.

Familiarize yourself with these cleaning principles when using the RIDGID FlexShaft Machines to maximize usage of the drain cleaning machine and prevent damage to the machine and even to the fixtures.
