RIDGID Strap Wrenches are best for any polished pipe. Strong, woven nylon strap treated with a powdered rosin, which provides an extra tight grip. Two models are available with a special strap for plastic pipe.
Strap wrench capacity is limited by the tool's rated outside-diameter capacity and by the handle strength, not only the strap length. The largest strap wrench OD capacity offered is 12" (300 mm). Some model straps may be long enough to wrap larger objects, but wrapping beyond the recommended pipe size can produce torque higher than the handle is designed to withstand. For diameters substantially larger than the strap wrench capacity you would typically use a chain tong (which uses a chain rather than a strap). The smallest strap wrench offered is the No. 1, with a handle length of 11-3/4" (300 mm).
Coated straps are available for applications like plastic and PVC pipe; straps with a polyurethane coating are designated with a "P" and are intended to protect plastic pipes but can slip on other materials. A replacement plastic-coated nylon strap (catalog number 32065) is available; it is about 1 3/4" wide (45 mm) and 29 1/4" long (750 mm). The product line does not include a special "non-absorbent" strap beyond the coatings noted, and a standard (uncoated) strap can be used or assembled to handles when appropriate for the material.
Strap Wrenches use a strong woven nylon strap designed to grip without marring, making them well-suited for anodized pipe and polished surfaces; select models use special straps for plastic pipe. Typical strap lengths include 17" (425 mm), 24" (600 mm), 29-1/4" (750 mm), 30" (760 mm), 48" (1200 mm) for various capacities.
Strap Wrenches pipe capacity is up to 2" (50mm) for models 1, 2, 2P and up to 5" (125 mm) for models 5 and 5P.
