Rated 5 out of 5 Very happy with vacuum, low and stable, easier to transport than traditional shop vacuum shape, yet still powerful. Very happy with vacuum, low and stable, easier to transport than traditional shop vacuum shape. Still very powerful and 4 gallon still more that adequate for my usage. Can't really comment on durability since I've only had it for a short time... but seems to be built tough... August 31, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by It's really good easy to storage I sure recomend it nice and easy to carry only one thing all the assesories come separe August 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great 5hp peak portable shop vac that does not tip over when you pull it by the hose... I've only used a few times but so far I'm very pleased with it. If you are using to mainly vac water then you should get a bigger size because it won't hold a lot of water. If you are mainly using it to clean your car, trailer, or work area in your garage it's perfect. Having a peak of 5hp the suction is way better then some of the other bigger shop vacs that I've previously owned. August 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Just bought it, and a few thoughts. I needed a new garage vacuum cleaner, and looked around for second hand units, then at new units, and decided on the new one. First off, if you look carefully at the prices and replacement parts such as the filter, then the second hand units were priced just about the same, maybe even more, than a new unit. I bought this unit in Canada, in Surrey BC for $79 at Home Depot. Craigslist and Kiji had vacuums for $40 to $80 which were larger, older, used, and no further warranty. With filter valued at $17 and taking that off the overall price, I was only paying about $60 for the actual vacuum. But this is with a lifetime warranty, and i consider it worth the extra few bucks. Something you have to think about. Also condider the hose and tools and cord are all new. The suction was rated 8, one point above similar priced units, but the tank volume was lower. Not a big deal for the lower volume as it ran for about 30 minutes or more before I had to empty. It was great for sucking up spider webs and dirt and spiders off the ceiling. We get a lot of them this time of year. Blowing spider webs doesn't work. Vacuum does. So that was great. The suction is good, even with the filter quite dirty. Now the unit comes with two tools, one of which fits into the unit and the other goes into the rear tray holder. OK, but you have to remember to take stuff out of that rear tray holder holder before you turn the vacuum over to empty the debris it has sucked up. Otherwise all ends up in the garbage pail. Then you end up retrieveing the tools. OK, having understood that, I decided the units two tools weren't enough and yes Home Depot sells a lot of tools. They also sell a hose diameter converter which lets you connect tools from your old vacuum to the new Rigid system. That is good in that the converter three piece kit for $17 roughly saved buying the Rigid kit of other tools for over $50. So consider use of that. I could reuse my 30 year old Sears canister vacuum tools with this vacuum giving some real cost advantages. It is noisy, as others have reported, and so you should consider either a muffler available at Home Depot or ear plugs or over ear sound protection. remember that noise damage to the ear is cumulative, so over time, ear protection on any noisy equipment use is a good idea. All these vacuums have the same issue. Now, I bought two bags, but the bags were really fine dust items, which I wasn't doing, so a waste. I was vacuuming up mouse poo, and that can contain viruses, so used a face mask. The mouse poo clogged at the entrance to the bag so soon decided to throw away the bag with what was in it, and not use a bag. So there are instructions in the book on using bleach to get rid of bacteria etc. in the tank. I will do that. I used the vacuum outside to vacuum up Douglas fir needles, a job the old Sears canister with a smaller hose, did not do well. This vacuum did a marvellous job using the old floor tool and hose diameterr converter item. I could also add my Sears hose extenders to the Rigid extenders to get even more length. I havent quite been able to add the two hoses together, the new Rigid hose to the SEars hose, but have it figured out I think. Just gives a better working length to keep the hose exhaust outside. The unit exhaust points in the same direction at the suction so it blows back at you, but I am considering putting the old Sear hose on that to contol where it blows to. The blower part of the unit, just connect the suction hose to the exhaust, a good fit, and you have a blower hose. Not as strong as commerical blower, but very good. In fact the lower blow pressure is maybe better, for jobs where a high blow rate is not wanted. It was a good idea to blow off my sidewalk around the house, and then vacuum up that which didn't go away on a blow. And with the hose and "car" tool, the blower was very directional and well under control. No blow back like you get with a garden blower where debris ends up behind you in the area your just blew out. So condider this air flow control a benefit. Now, the filter. Something to clog up, but I was only doing dry stuff, and so following the instructions in the manual, took off the clogged up filter, and shook it. Be sure to stand up wind of the shaking. The wind blew away the plentiful dirt and dust and debris. So thenI reassembbled the vacuum without the filter, had the filter in my hand, and used the blow feature with the hose and car tool to blow uout the filter from the inside out. Worked great, clean filter again, reinstalled and good to go. I like the storage instructions to wrap the cord around the cleaner, and that 20 foot cord lenght is great. Not confined to a short distance and no involved with an extension issue. So all this observation after only three or four hours use. Hand happy with this canister design, it wheels along just fine. Rated 5 out of 5 by Time will tell how long it will last My mom has had her vacuum for 10 years and Im proud to say that it still works great. The only issue that I see as a problem for the future is the filter they should of kept the bolt and lock nut . Instead of the rubber piece on the bottom of the filter. I feel there is a lot of filter buying in the future for me. And that would not make me feel good. August 15, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by This vacuum is a performer The vacuum is a performer. Small, powerful, and durable. I have owned this vacuum for over a year now and it is by far my favorite vacuum to date. I have put this vacuum threw a number of tasks from cleaning my car, tiling floors, sawdust, and more and it hasn't failed me yet. My only gripe about this vacuum is the short, cheap, hose that comes with. I opted to purchase ridgid's orange pro hose which I recommend to anyone looking to buy this vacuum as its a much better hose. Way more durable, longer, and flexes a little better. Some say the pro hose should come with the vacuum, but I don't believe that is true. As that would drive the price up on the vacuum taking it out of its intended price range. August 13, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent tool with versatility I am on my third vacuum. I gave my first to my step daughter for cleaning. I am a general contractor and always need a vac close by. I have a large shop vac that is used when I am on site with a large area and extended usage. The 4 gallon is perfect for most of the rest. I added the longer, more flexible hose for more reach. I always use the vac bags in addition to the main filter. I pick up construction dust, saw dust, drywall dust, etc. The bags make it cleaner and faster to empty and don't requiring blowing out the main filter all the time. I use a full size floor wand for whole floor clean up. It truly has the power of my large 6 hp unit. I recently bought a new one as my 2 year old unit motor just whinned out. Since I have always used bags on this unit, it should not have quit. I do not think there is a better unit so I bought another one. August 13, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good choice So far I am very pleased with this product, it is outperforming every other vac. that I have owned!! August 13, 2015

Answer:
Absolutely! There must be a foam filter on the unit when vacuuming up liquids to prevent debris from getting in to the impeller.

Answer:
Here are some notes from the manual:
Vacuuming Liquids:
1. When picking up small amounts of liquid the filter may be left in place,
2. When picking up large amounts of liquid we recommend that the filter be removed. If the filter is not removed it will become saturated and misting may appear in the exhaust.
Warning: do not remove the filter cage and float. The float prevents liquid from entering the impeller and damaging the motor. The cage prevents fingers from touching the impeller.
3. When the liquid in the drum reaches a predetermined level, the float mechanism will rise automatically to cut off airflow. You will know that the float has risen because vac airflow ceases and the motor noise will become higher in pitch, due to increased motor speed. When this happens, turn off the vac unplug the power cord, and empty the drum.
4. After using the vac to pick up liquids, the filter must be dried to avoid possible mildew and damage to the filter.

Thank you

Thank you for your interest in RIDGID!

It is encourage using a wet rug and wiping the dust accumulated on the vacuum’s power head rather than washing it directly with water as the water might enter to the motor which will be a safety issue.

Unless you are using it as a wet vac make sure to use a clean filter that is properly installed, (it's simple), and if need be wipe down the motor housing with a damp, not wet, cloth with the unit unplugged.

The filter and the way it mounts on to the vacuum is exactly the same as many other brands. So though I have not done so myself. I am pretty sure there is a foam filter out there under another brand that will fit.
